Ram Das' Power Smoothie!

As a Kundalini yoga teacher, owner of Adi Shakti Yoga Centre since 2003, Federal public servant, wife, and mom to 2 great pets, my day begins early (before 5 am) and usually ends late (around 11:30 pm). People often ask how I can maintain such great energy to get everything done. I tell them 2 things in particular keep me strong: my daily morning Sadhana (early a.m. yoga & meditation) plus my favourite morning Power Smoothie. I rave about this mega-fantabulous-super-delicious smoothie (...see what I mean?...) so much & so often, that people ask me for the recipe.

Now keep in mind, this is my own creation: it suits my needs for high nutrition beautifully. It may or may not be the right combo for you, so feel free to adjust it to suit your requirements. That being said, here is my typical recipe. You will need a high quality blender. Invest in a good one - it will serve you for years. And I recommend that for any of the frozen fruit used, you allow it to defrost in the fridge overnight. It is not the best idea to drink something super cold, and especially not in the winter. Drink this smoothie at room temperature for best absorption.

Ingredients

  • 1+ cup frozen or fresh wild blueberries (+ sometimes other seasonal berries)
  • 1/2 cup frozen or fresh mango
  • 1 banana (organic)
  • 1 freshly squeezed lemon (always fresh please!!)
  • 1 scoop Greens + Extra Energy (found at health food stores & most grocery chains)
  • 1-2 heaping Tbsp. powdered Canadian hemp (super protein!)
  • 1 heaping tsp ground flax (organic)
  • 2 heaping tsp maca powder (quality health food stores carry this)
  • a generous splash of liquid chlorophyll
  • 1-2 Tbsp Udo's Choice omega oil (a truly powerful blend, all vegetarian)
  • filtered water, enough to blend your mix smoothly
  • +...any of your current supplements: I open the capsules and mix them right in. My current faves: MSM for connective tissue health; capsules for eye health; probiotic powder

And voilà - you will have about 4-5 cups of smoothie. It seems like a lot, but no worries - drink up, this is breakfast! I take it on an empty stomach right after morning yoga. My body absorbs every vitamin & mineral so happily. I even share about about a cup's worth with my dog-kid Ginger-Spice. No wonder she's in such great health too!

Santé & sat nam!
